WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?
Stem cells are cells naturally found in the body that are essentially a “blank slate”. That means they can become a different type of cell. For example, a stem cell can become a muscle cell, a joint cell, a skin cell or nerve cell.
WHERE DO STEM CELLS COME FROM?
There are 3 sources of stem cells currently available. Bone marrow and adipose (fat) tissue both contain stem cells. To harvest these stem cells from bone marrow or adipose, a potentially dangerous surgery must be performed with several weeks recovery time.
Amniotic Stem Cells on the other hand come from the amniotic sac and are donated by a mother after having a live birth by c-section. Both the mother and the cells recovered from the amniotic sac are meticulously tested for disease to ensure their quality and safety.
HOW DO STEM CELLS WORK
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells with growth factors. These are just technical terms for saying the cell is a “blank slate” and have factors that stimulate the growth of cells. These blank slate cells can differentiate (turn in to) any type of cell in the musculoskeletal system. This includes Muscles, Tendons, Ligaments, Meniscus, Other Joint Tissue, and Nerves. This means they have the potential to grow new, healthy tissue in an area damaged by either injury or repetitive stress over time.
What makes stem cells even more unique, is in addition to having the ability to change into other types of tissue, they also divide and CREATE MORE STEM CELLS. That means that after the treatment, the stem cells continue to divide in the damaged area, creating more stem cells to heal damaged tissue over the course of several months. A study by the National Institute of Health showed that a small number of stem cells can reproduce into over a million stem cells in just a few months!
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Most patients will only need one treatment (per area of pain). Because of this amazing ability for the stem cells to create more stem cells over time, they will continue to divide and heal the damaged tissue until the job is done.
ARE STEM CELL INJECTIONS SAFE?
To date, more than 10,000 Amniotic Stem Cells Treatments have been given without a single adverse event. As will all types of injections, a small risk of some redness and soreness around the injection may occur.
Amniotic Stem Cells come from the immunoprivileged region in the amniotic sac. This means there are no antibodies and extremely low chance of rejection, with no incidence of rejection reported to date.
Their use has been research and determined to be safe and effective. Donors go through an extensive screening process and donate tissue is regulated by the FDA and American Association of Tissue Banks.
